Where did Find Papers, Extract Data, and Chat with Papers go?

What happened to the standalone tools, where your old sessions went, and how to carry that work into a Research Agent session.

On 30 September 2026, Find Papers, Extract Data, and Chat with Papers were removed as separate tools and incorporated into the Research Agent workflow.

What about existing Find Papers, Extract Data, or Chat with Papers sessions?

Your existing Find Papers, Extract Data, and Chat with Papers sessions are still available in Recents. Open one and you will find your searches, tables, columns, and conversations exactly as you left them.

These sessions are now view-only. Reading and exporting still work, but you can't add to or edit them. New work happens in the Research Agent now.

We recommend moving all Find Papers, Extract Data, and Chat with Papers sessions that you want to keep to a Research Agent session. These legacy sessions will be removed from Elicit on a to be determined date in 2027. You will receive notifications by email when a date has been chosen. See how below.

Carry an old session into the Agent

Every legacy session has an action to start a new Research Agent session using its work.

What moves across depends on the session:

  • Find Papers: the search query, the paper set, and the relevant table data become context in the new agent session.

  • Extract Data: the source papers and the extraction table become context in the new agent session.

  • Chat with Papers: the papers and a record of the earlier chat conversation become context in the new session. The old conversation is not replayed in the new session. The agent simply has it to use as background as the chat continues in the new session.

From there, keep going: ask a follow-up, add a column, pull in more papers, or ask for a different output entirely. Sessions are converted one at a time, when you click the . There is no bulk conversion, and nothing converts on its own.

How to do the same work now

  • Instead of starting a Find Papers search: use the Find Papers skill from the homepage, or ask the agent to find papers.

  • Instead of starting an Extract Data table: use the Extract Data skill from the homepage, or give the agent papers and ask for a table.

  • Instead of starting a Chat with Papers session: upload or select papers in a Research Agent session and ask your questions directly.

  • To add a column to a table: use Add column on any agent-created table or just tell the agent what column(s) you'd like to add.

Find Papers and Extract Data are now skills the Research Agent rather than separate tools. See Skills in Elicit for how skills work.

Exporting from an old session

Export still works from view-only sessions. See Export your data from Elicit for the available formats.

If you have run out of monthly usage

When your plan's monthly usage is exhausted, the Research Agent is restricted to Find Papers use cases. A note in the message box and on the homepage will indicate when your usage limit has been reached. Searching for papers and creating Find Papers tables within a research agent session will remain available, and other agent work resumes when your usage refreshes. See Usage limits in Elicit.
